Aldose

An aldose is a type of monosaccharide, which is a simple sugar consisting of a single sugar unit. Specifically, an aldose is a monosaccharide that contains an aldehyde functional group (-CHO) as its most oxidized or terminal functional group.

The name "aldose" is derived from "aldo-" (referring to the aldehyde group) and "-ose" (indicating a sugar). Aldoses are characterized by having a carbonyl group (C=O) at the end of the carbon chain, forming an aldehyde. This distinguishes them from ketoses, which have a carbonyl group within the carbon chain, forming a ketone.

Aldoses can exist in both linear and cyclic forms. In an aqueous solution, many aldoses undergo intramolecular reactions, forming cyclic structures. The most common cyclic form is a six-membered ring known as a pyranose ring, created by an intramolecular reaction between the aldehyde group and an alcohol group on another carbon within the same molecule.

Examples of aldoses include glucose, galactose, and ribose. Glucose, in particular, is a fundamental aldose that serves as a primary energy source for many organisms. Galactose is another important aldose found in lactose, a sugar present in milk. Ribose is a component of RNA (ribonucleic acid) and plays a vital role in genetic information transfer.
