Allopolyploidy

Allopolyploidy is a type of polyploidy that occurs when two or more different species interbreed and combine their genomes, resulting in offspring with multiple sets of chromosomes from each parent species. The term "allo-" refers to the different or other species involved in the process, while "polyploidy" refers to the presence of more than two sets of chromosomes.

Polyploidy itself refers to the condition of having more than two complete sets of chromosomes. In allopolyploidy, the extra sets of chromosomes come from different species rather than being duplicated within a single species. This can happen through hybridization, where reproductive cells from different species combine to form a new organism.

Allopolyploidy is a common mechanism in plant evolution and has contributed significantly to the diversity and adaptation of many plant species. It can lead to the formation of new species by creating reproductive isolation between the parent species and providing new genetic material for adaptation. The combination of different genomes in allopolyploids can result in increased genetic variation, which can enhance the resilience and adaptability of the offspring.

One well-known example of allopolyploidy is wheat. Modern cultivated wheat species, such as bread wheat (Triticum aestivum), originated from natural hybridization events between different ancestral grass species, resulting in a combination of their genomes and the development of a highly productive crop.

Allopolyploidy can also occur in animals, but it is less common than plants. However, there are some documented cases of allopolyploidy in animals, particularly among amphibians and fish.
