Somatotrophs are endocrine cells in the anterior pituitary gland that secrete growth hormone (GH), also known as somatotropin. GH plays a crucial role in the growth and development of the human body, particularly during childhood and adolescence. Somatotrophs are one of several types of endocrine cells in the anterior pituitary gland located at the brain’s base. These cells are stimulated to secrete GH by releasing growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) from the hypothalamus above the pituitary gland. The release of GH is also inhibited by somatostatin, a hormone produced by specialized cells in the hypothalamus. A complex feedback system involving multiple hormones and feedback loops regulates GH secretion by somatotrophs. For example, the hormone insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), produced in the liver in response to GH, feeds back to the pituitary and hypothalamus to regulate GH secretion. In addition to its role in growth and development, GH has metabolic effects, including stimulating the breakdown of stored fats (lipolysis) and increasing glucose production by the liver (gluconeogenesis). These effects are essential in maintaining blood glucose levels during fasting or stress. Abnormalities in GH secretion can lead to various disorders, including growth hormone deficiency (GHD) and acromegaly. GHD is characterized by inadequate GH secretion during childhood and can lead to short stature and other developmental abnormalities. Acromegaly is characterized by excessive GH secretion in adulthood, which can lead to a range of symptoms, including enlargement of the hands and feet, facial features, and other organs.
