Osteoporosis

A disease in which the bones are weakened by reduced Calcium absorption. Long-term use of glucocorticoids can result in this condition. Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disorder characterized by low bone mass, micro-architectural deterioration of bone tissue, and increased fracture risk.

The condition occurs when the creation of new bone fails to keep pace with the loss of old bone, which is a natural process since bone is a living tissue constantly undergoing renewal.

Osteoporosis weakens bones and makes them prone to fractures, even from minor stresses like bending or coughing. Fractures associated with osteoporosis are most commonly found in the hip, wrist, or spine.

Osteoporosis affects individuals of all races and genders, but postmenopausal women, especially those of white or Asian descent, are at the highest risk.
