An antibody screen is a laboratory test used to detect and identify antibodies in a person's blood. It is commonly performed during blood donation, pregnancy, or before a blood transfusion to determine the presence of unexpected antibodies that could potentially cause a transfusion reaction or other medical complications. During an antibody screen, a small sample of the person's blood is taken and tested against a panel of known red blood cell antigens. The antigens are substances located on the surface of red blood cells. If the person's blood contains antibodies that react with any of the antigens in the panel, it indicates the presence of unexpected antibodies. In the context of blood transfusions, an antibody screen is conducted to ensure compatibility between the donor's blood and the recipient's blood. If unexpected antibodies are detected in the recipient's blood, the blood bank will perform additional tests, such as crossmatching, to find a compatible blood unit for transfusion. During pregnancy, an antibody screen is a routine part of prenatal care. It helps identify antibodies in the mother's blood that could affect the health of the fetus, particularly if the mother has been previously exposed to foreign red blood cell antigens. Some examples of antibodies that can cause hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) include Rh antibodies and antibodies against other blood group antigens. The antibody screen is an essential tool for ensuring safe blood transfusions and providing appropriate care during pregnancy. It allows healthcare providers to detect and manage potential complications related to incompatible blood or maternal-fetal blood group incompatibilities. The results of the antibody screen guide medical decisions to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients and infants.
