The proposed resolution was folding pathways, the attainment of the native conformation by passage through a series of fairly well-defined on-pathway intermediates; if no kinetic barrier to refolding was detected, this reduced to a two-state model; if a barrier was detected, this was explained in terms of off-pathway kinetic dead-ends, or high energy transition states.
